Internal Communication Creates the Best Brand Ambassadors

Regardless of industry, brand ambassadorship is often treated merely as a digital metric — likes and LinkedIn shares here and there. True brand ambassadorship runs deeper. It is the organic outcome of a healthy internal culture, visible in ways that social media algorithms do not always capture.

Employees are among the most trusted sources of information within an organization. External stakeholders may not believe a press release or paid advertisement, but they often turn their attention to employees, the people who shape the culture and live it every day.

The Three Forms of Brand Ambassadorship

To build a strong group of advocates, it is important to recognize the many forms ambassadorship can take:

  • The Digital Influencer: The most visible form of ambassadorship. An employee who shares a job posting, reinforces key messages on social media, or celebrates a colleague’s success with a comment.
  • The Verbal Advocate: A large share of genuine influence happens outside social media, at industry events or over a cup of coffee with a colleague.
  • The Everyday Ambassador: In nearly every industry, each customer encounter communicates something about the brand. An engaged employee who goes beyond expectations to solve a customer’s problem offers a tangible example of the company’s true culture.

The Benefits of Workplace Communication

When workplace communication – also known as internal organizational communication — is prioritized, the benefits extend far beyond creating a pleasant workplace. It can be seen in

  • Proactive problem-solving. When internal communication is consistent and engaging, employees adopt the company culture and strive to meet and exceed goals.
  • Lower employee turnover. Employees who identify with the company’s values, culture, vision, and mission want to stay and grow with the organization.
  • Improved customer service. Motivated employees are willing to step beyond their formal job descriptions to fulfill customer needs, which, unsurprisingly, increases customer satisfaction.

Workplace Communication at the Core of Brand Ambassadorship

Workplace communication often serves as the bridge between a paycheck and passionate brand ambassadorship. However, not just any internal communication will do, and you cannot force someone to become a brand ambassador.

Trust built through transparency plays a central role. Today’s employees increasingly value transparency, in both good and bad news. When leadership communicates openly about goals and challenges, employees feel like they are part of the culture.

Another cornerstone of workplace communication is helping employees internalize company values. Through open and transparent dialogue, employees can adopt the brand story as their own, which strengthens commitment and increases the likelihood of ambassadorship.

Workplace Communication Requires Consistent Effort

Although research shows that brand messages spread up to 24 times faster when shared through employees’ own channels, many companies fail to create brand ambassadors. The reason often lies in the consistency and time required, investments that are either underestimated or misunderstood.

Neglecting workplace communication does not merely result in the loss of brand ambassadors; it creates brand critics. These critics represent the other side of ambassadorship: they are more likely to change jobs, deter potential employees, and alienate others from the company’s values and culture.

Internal and External Communication in Collaboration

Despite its significant benefits, internal communication often remains in a supporting role. External communication, with its eye-catching headlines and measurable results, is undoubtedly important. But it cannot replace internal communication.

When internal communication is properly prioritized, it supports external communication and its objectives through brand ambassadors. This creates a positive chain reaction reflected in improved customer satisfaction and employer reputation.

Organizing internal communication can be demanding, but it is rewarding in the long run. If your company needs support in strengthening internal communication, building its foundations, or creating brand ambassadors, we are happy to help!
